Course Guidelines (2016 – 2017)
Welcome to RSP LC Math 1! I hope that you will find our class to be a great learning experience, one that you will hopefully learn to like doing the mathJ. This course is a modification of the general education Mathematics Department curriculum for Algebra 1. We will work to build algebraic reasoning and problem solving skills to correspond with the new Common Core math standards and the Board-approved LCHS Mathematics Department curriculum. The modifications will be dictated by each student’s individual needs and the pace of the class will be determined by the needs and abilities of the students. In addition to the text, additional supplementary materials may be used in order to reinforce curriculum content.
Materials needed:
Composition Notebook
Graph paper,
Calculator,
Pencils and erasers,
Correcting Pen (any color EXCEPT blue or black),
3-Ring Notebook
A whiteboard marker (blue or black)
Grading:
Grading will be based on the accumulation of points from class assignments, performance tasks/projects, class participation, quizzes, and tests. I take into account the completeness of the assignment, following directions, correct computations, and effort put forth to produce the finished product. I also take into account the ability level of the individual student as outlined in their Individualized Education Plan and make modifications/accommodations as needed.
Grading Scale:
A: 90 – 100% B: 80 – 89% C: 70 – 79% D: 60 – 69% F: 59% or below
Student Responsibility: To be respectful and courteous to everyone at all times and to follow school rules. Also, to attempt all math with a good attitude, and to ask for help when needed! J In our class we follow the 5 P’s: Be Prompt, Prepared, Polite, Productive and Positive!
How to Succeed:
Come to class prepared and with a good attitude.
Listen, take notes, and ask questions in class whenever you do not understand or need help.
Do your best on all assignments. Always try to complete the work to the best of your ability.
Keep a neat and organized notebook so you can use it as a resource for completing assignments and studying for tests.
Get help when you need it. I’m willing to assist you before, during and after class. All you have to do is ask.
To earn and “O” for outstanding citizenship, you will follow all the expected behavior as well as participate during class and have zero unexcused tardies. And “S” constitutes not following certain behaviors and/or 1 unexcused tardy. An “N” for 3 unexcused tardies, and “U” for 4 or more.
Absences: YOU are responsible for making up missed assignments.
Go to my website to see the homework and call on a classmate
See Mrs. Deans for anything else you may have missed
Check the “Absent? Look Here” Folder
You have the same number of days you were absent to make up work.
Extra Help / Questions: I am available to my students and their families. Students who desire extra help can meet with me by prearrangement before or after school. I can be reached at LCHS at (818) 952-4200 (Room 308) or by email: [email protected] I also keep my website updated with useful tools to help in understanding concepts.
In closing: I look forward to working with you in making this a successful year and will do whatever I can to help you achieve your potential as an algebra student and as an individual. The skills you learn in this class will serve you well in the future. “While you might not use algebra in your life, you will use the logical thinking skills that algebra teaches daily.” – author unknown.
